Accomplishments

  • Setting up facilities, staffing, and permits for vector biology/control in FL, CA, TX, and overseas.
  • Emergency and disaster response to Zika in Miami/Dade and Hurricane Harvey in Texas.
  • Vector competence of local mosquitoes for the viruses that cause Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), West Nile (WNV), and Chikungunya (CHIK). 
  • Partnered with USDA-Gainesville to monitor pesticide resistance in Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in Florida.
  • Field evaluation of Wolbachia and self-limiting gene technology (Oxitec) to control Aedes aegypti.
  • Worked with Virginia housing authority to monitor and control bed bugs in subsidized housing.
  • Training mosquito control and public health districts in the U.S. to improve surveillance and response to vector-borne diseases.
